A metering pump represents a significant investment for chemical dosing systems. Many users find that their metering pump loses accuracy or suffers unexpected shutdowns prematurely, most of which are caused by improper daily operation, lack of regular maintenance and ignoring early fault signals. Implementing standard maintenance and troubleshooting procedures can keep your metering pump maintaining stable dosing accuracy and greatly extend its working lifespan.

The most common wearing part of a diaphragm-type metering pump is the diaphragm. The diaphragm works under reciprocating tension and chemical erosion. Regular visual inspection is necessary. Signs such as liquid leakage from the pump head, unstable flow and fluctuating dosing volume usually indicate diaphragm aging or damage. Replace the diaphragm according to the manufacturer’s recommended cycle. For pumps handling strong corrosive or oxidizing chemicals, shorten inspection intervals, as chemical attack accelerates diaphragm degradation.

Check valves are another key consumable for a metering pump. Inlet and outlet check valves ensure one-way fluid flow. Debris, crystal sediment and chemical scaling may stick on valve balls and seats, leading to poor sealing. Symptoms include reduced output flow, unstable metering, or pump running but no liquid discharged. Operators should disassemble and clean the valve assembly periodically. Remove crystallized deposits and inspect valve ball wear. Replace worn valve components when backflow occurs. Installing suction strainer can reduce solid particles entering pump chambers and protect check valves and diaphragms.

Daily routine inspection checklist for metering pump covers multiple items. Check for liquid leakage on pump head, joints and piping. Verify displayed flow value matches calibration column measurement result. Listen for abnormal noise or vibration. Check operating temperature of drive housing. Monitor chemical tank liquid level to avoid running the metering pump dry, which will rapidly damage the diaphragm and internal components. For digitally controlled metering pumps, regularly check alarm logs, communication signal status and sensor linkage.

Common metering pump faults and simple troubleshooting: 1. No liquid output: possible reasons include empty tank, blocked suction pipeline, stuck check valve, air trapped inside pump head. Bleed air from the pump and clean the suction circuit. 2. Low or unstable flow: check valve leakage, diaphragm wear, insufficient back pressure. Install or adjust back-pressure valve and inspect diaphragm. 3. Pump motor runs but no dosing: air locking or severe valve failure. 4. Frequent diaphragm rupture: excessive system pressure, dry running, incompatible wetted material. Reconfirm chemical compatibility and pipeline pressure.

Besides periodic maintenance, good operational practices protect your metering pump. Never use a metering pump for media outside its material compatibility range. Chemical crystallization is a top killer: dissolve or dilute chemicals properly and keep pipelines warm if media is easy to crystallize. During long idle periods, flush the whole pump and piping system with clean water to remove residual chemicals, preventing sediment and corrosion.

Safety rules must be followed during maintenance. Cut off power supply before disassembly. Wear protective gloves, goggles and protective clothing for corrosive chemical systems. Prepare spill kits for chemical leakage handling. Keep spare parts including diaphragms, valve balls, seals in stock to minimize downtime during failures.

In short, the metering pump is a precision device, not a maintenance-free pump. Scheduled inspection, timely replacement of consumables, regular pipeline flushing and standardized operation are the keys to maintain consistent metering performance. With systematic maintenance management, your metering pump can operate stably for years, delivering accurate chemical dosing and avoiding costly unexpected plant downtime.
